The Waste Knot wasted little time in the 2024
White Marlin Open. They put up the first billfish
of the tournament, a 77.5-pound white marlin, on
Tuesday, right as the scales opened at 4 p.m.
They then had to hold on with trepidation as
there were four days of fishing left and everybody
was gunning for that first-place white.
Capt. Micheal Tickle describes that early catch. “It was Tuesday. We were looking
for white marlin but we knew there were some blues about so we had some heavy
tackle out as well.We headed to the Poor Man’s and went a few miles past the
other boats we saw. When the temperature dropped a notch, we stopped right
there and began to fish.”
Thirty minutes after lines in, the crew saw a white come into the short rigger
which was set up for blue marlin with an 80 and a plug. The mate began to retrieve
it, but the fish piled on the plug. When the Tickle finally got a good look at it, he
thought ‘that’s not the smallest white I have seen’.
Ven Poole was on the rod. The heavy tackle helped him land the fish in a matter
of minutes.
