Day one of the White Marlin Open is in the books, and while rough offshore conditions kept much of the fleet at the dock, a handful of determined crews made the run and were rewarded with some impressive catches.
Leading the tuna division after the opening day is Full Service, an Ocean City boat, with a beautiful 84-pound tuna caught by Mike Freiji from Fallston, MD. Close behind is fellow Ocean City boat Talkin Trash with an 81.5-pound tuna caught by angler Dan Caiola from Frederick, MD followed by another Ocean City contender, Game On, rounding out the top three with an 80.5-pound tuna from angler John Friedmann from Middletown, DE.
With rough seas offshore, these three local boats were among the few willing to brave the conditions, and their gamble paid off with leaderboard-worthy fish. Their success set the tone for the tournament and proved that sometimes the biggest rewards come to those willing to battle the elements.
The weather, however, limited participation on day one. With a much calmer forecast for tomorrow, a significantly larger portion of the fleet is expected to head offshore in search of tournament-winning fish.
Day one gave us an exciting start, but there's still a long way to go. As more boats join the action and conditions improve, the leaderboard could change in a hurry. If today was any indication, we're in for an incredible week at the White Marlin Open. The only question now is: what will the rest of the week bring?
